This Saturday was not like the others. There was a concert. What is more it was a workday in Bulgaria but even workdays can't stop rock 'n' roll. So we got on my cousin's Alfa Romeo, crossed the
Balkan Mountains without getting lost and ended up in
Lovech.
Renegade turned out to be quite good Power Metal band. They handled their instruments well but the most impressive part were the two vocalists. The main one was a mountain of muscles and the other had so cheerful and sincere smile that one could not help but like him. If you have seen
Funky playing in concert you will know what I mean. They also played a cover of
Shturztite – the one with the horse dying on the white snow.
Although they had not been announced in advance the "favorites" of the Bulgarian audience Sixth Sense got on the stage. In the last year these unpleasant guys played like 10 times in Bulgaria. It does not seem like the audience likes them. Again catcall and middle fingers in the air just like before. Not to mention, that wearing a "Buck Fush" t-shirt when you are Russian and Putin is one of the few shitheads in world politics that is more dangerous than Bush is plain hypocrisy. I do not know who are you that pushes the promoters to let them play on every concert but whoever you are STOP IT! You are not making them a favor. They are not even that bad (especially the guitar player), but they are a good example that playing is not enough for rock. And I thought we get to see BTR too often...
Twisted Sister are one of the bands that one is not likely to become fan of if he was not introduced to them when he was 15*. I cannot imagine that I can like a band with so naive music and lyrics if I was not a fan for years but now I am an addict and I feel like I am 15 every time I hear Twisted Sister and I believe them. The concert started with the traditional It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll). For those of you that are not familiar we are talking about a recording. According to the legend that I have heard Twisted Sister had a hard time getting a record deal so this song had big and symbolic meaning for them. To my surprise they did not play their regular opening song What You Don't Know (Sure Can Hurt You) and opened with You Can't Stop Rock 'n' Roll instead. The set list was changed to match the 25th anniversary of the "You Can't Stop Rock 'n' Roll" album. My favorites Under the Blade and the aforementioned What You Don't Know (Sure Can Hurt You) were missing but we got the brutal Destroyer instead. That can be considered good for anyone that was on the concert in
Kavarna two years ago because we got to hear some songs that we had not heard live before.
The changes in the set list got the band's photographer Jay Jay French (also playing guitar sometimes) while he was announcing The Fire Still Burns which provoked the first of the series of jokes with him by Dee. Jay Jay gave us his regular speech about how happy he is that when Twisted Sister are celebrating 30 years on stage rock is not only alive but they and their friends from other hard rock and metal bands are making concerts with thousands of people in the audience. In the list of friends Jay Jay named Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper and Motorhead. This is in contrast with the blunder of That Guy from That Band** who was throwing off Iron Maiden t-shirts because obviously it was not true metal enough for him. Dee got us shouting so Sofia could hear us on We're Not Gonna Take It and mentioned Kavarna which shows he new very well in what country he is and that he comes here for the second time unlike That Other Guy from That Other Band***.
I am relatively skinny and I cannot easily move to the front in concerts. What is more in Kavarna I was on the fence so I had decided to stay behind this time but when the melee started I somehow got to the 4th row. In the audience we had the typical dead drunk idiot that was almost fighting his way ahead and only to get back and throw up later, there were the not-so-drunk elderly SMFs showing a great example of team work, pushing through the crowd while the first one says with a smile "They are pushing me from behind". The latter I usually find fun and I do not feel bad when they manage to push me back. However this time the top of all kinds of individuals pushing their way ahead was a very beautiful girl who was giving away smiles and asking politely to be given some space. After that she managed to push back the fool that has made the space and make way for her and her boyfriend. For these that do not automatically surrender to her beauty and voice she was offering a sip from a bottle of alcohol. I have never been pushed back in a concert in so pleasant way. I had good laugh. Another interesting sight was a quite short but loud fan on a girl's shoulders. The girl was no more than 55 kilos but the guy was even less. Emancipation I guess...
In the end we were photographed for the
website but Dee found out that some guy from the audience had closed his eyes, so we had to do it again. Then the band's photographer Jay Jay got all messed up, so we he had to take like 5 pictures.
The sound was not as powerful as it was in Kavarna, something that was evident even from the size of the equipment but it was quite balanced and clear. There were lights and smoke in the proper way and there were even fires in the Renegade's show.
Sister closed the show with the classic encore – Come Out and Play and SMF and we headed home. When they come for the third time I will be there again!
